Campus Beauty
Functional

NJIT is fundamentally a commuter school — about 80% of students drive in rather than live on campus, which means the social scene empties out after classes end. Over 30 Greek organizations exist on paper, but with the commuter dynamic, their visibility is limited. The recent campus expansions signal an institutional push to build residential culture, and the diverse, STEM-focused student body is genuine if understated.

An urban campus in Newark with a mix of mid-century utilitarian buildings and newer glass additions, improving but still largely functional in character with limited green space.

Based on Niche reviews, Princeton Review surveys, student forums, and institutional data.

Safety

Campus SafetySafe

Campus crime reduced by 89% since 2011. Named safest college campus in New Jersey in 2021. Provides 24/7 security, electronic dorm access, and late-night transport.

Neighborhood SafetyModerate

The University Heights district has lower crime than Newark overall, with joint police patrols. However, Newark's broader crime rates are elevated; awareness beyond campus is important.

Based on Clery Act data, student surveys, and local crime statistics.

Insider Tips
Walk to Newark's Ironbound district (10 minutes east of campus) for some of the best Portuguese, Spanish, and Brazilian food in America -- over 175 restaurants packed into a few blocks. Ferry Street is the main drag. This is one of the great food neighborhoods in the NYC metro area.
Visit Branch Brook Park in spring when its 5,000+ cherry blossom trees bloom -- it has more cherry blossoms than Washington DC and is right next to campus. Locals and students consider it Newark's crown jewel.
Check out the Newark Museum of Art, the largest museum in New Jersey, with 80+ galleries and the most significant collection of Tibetan art outside Southeast Asia. It's a 15-minute walk from campus.
NJIT shares its University Heights campus area with Rutgers-Newark -- the combined energy of two universities creates more nightlife, dining, and cultural options than you'd expect from NJIT's size alone.
Best Time to Visit

Late March through April for cherry blossoms in Branch Brook Park and active campus. September-October is also excellent. Experience Day events provide the most structured visit. Avoid summer and winter break when the commuter-heavy campus is quietest.

Getting There

NJIT Parking Deck at 154 Summit Street. Excellent transit: Newark Penn Station is nearby via NJ Transit rail, and the Newark Light Rail stops at Warren Street station (5-minute walk to campus).
