Campus Beauty
Beautiful

Santa Cruz is the UC system's countercultural outpost — nestled in a redwood forest with ocean views, it attracts students who actively chose a non-traditional college experience. Greek life is virtually nonexistent and would feel alien here; the social scene revolves around hiking, 4/20 on the meadow, and a progressive activist culture that permeates everything. Academics are solid but the vibe is genuinely relaxed, and the campus's physical beauty and isolation create a bubble that some find magical and others find limiting.

A 2,000-acre campus nestled in towering coastal redwood forests with sweeping views of Monterey Bay -- a setting chosen explicitly for its beauty over practicality. Buildings were designed to integrate with the forest rather than compete with it, creating a uniquely enchanting woodland campus.

Safety

Campus SafetySafe

UC Santa Cruz Police provide patrols and a student-run evening safety escort service. A 2024 state audit found the university had underreported 33 crimes, indicating the campus was less safe than statistics showed.

Neighborhood SafetyModerate

Santa Cruz has one of the higher crime rates in California, with homelessness and property crime being persistent issues downtown and in areas near campus.

Based on Clery Act data, student surveys, and local crime statistics.
