Campus Experience

Greek Life

Campus Beauty
Attractive

RPI is a place where studying feels like a full-time job and the social highlight of the year is hockey — the 'build things with friends' culture is genuine but won't win any party school awards. Greek life still anchors much of the weekend social scene in Troy, though participation has been declining. The gender ratio (historically skewed male) shapes the social dynamics, and students bond more over project teams and hackathons than nightlife.

A hillside campus in Troy overlooking the Hudson Valley with a blend of historic 19th-century stone buildings and modern facilities like the EMPAC performing arts center. The hilltop setting provides nice views, though the steep terrain and architectural mix limit cohesion.

Based on Niche reviews, Princeton Review surveys, student forums, and institutional data.

Safety

Campus SafetySafe

The hilltop campus has 24-hour security with electronically controlled dorm entrances, shuttle service, and escort programs.

Neighborhood SafetyModerate

Troy has above-average crime rates for a small city. Crime varies by neighborhood, with areas near downtown seeing more incidents than the hilltop campus area.

Based on Clery Act data, student surveys, and local crime statistics.

Insider Tips
Visit EMPAC (Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center) — the $200M building has the one of the most acoustically perfect concert hall in the world (1,200 seats) and hosts cutting-edge performances blending art, science, and technology. RPI students get free admission to all EMPAC events.
Walk down to the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market on Saturday mornings (May-October) — 100+ local vendors with fresh bread, seasonal produce, and local coffee make it one of the best farmers markets in upstate New York.
Get pizza at DeFazio's in downtown Troy — a student favorite for authentic wood-fired Italian pies, and grab gelato at De Fazio A Imports next door. Quang's Vietnamese Bistro is another student go-to for pho and vermicelli bowls.
Hike to Barberville Falls east of Troy — a hidden ~90-foot waterfall with surrounding trails (Creek Trail, Falls Trail, and a 0.75-mile Ridge Trail) that most visitors never discover. It's a local treasure.
Ask about the hockey culture — RPI is Division I hockey in the ECAC, and the Houston Field House atmosphere during rivalry games (especially vs. Union and Clarkson) is electric. Hockey is king in this corner of upstate New York.
Best Time to Visit

September through October for mild weather and peak fall foliage in the Hudson Valley, or April through May when campus is green and hockey season may still be running. The Big Red Freakout (homecoming) in October is worth timing around. Avoid late December through January (winter break) and be warned — Troy winters are harsh (heavy snow, sub-zero temps).
