Campus Beauty
Beautiful

Wisconsin is consistently ranked among the top party schools in America, but the party culture is less Greek-driven and more about the bar scene on State Street, house parties, football tailgates at Camp Randall, and the lakeside setting that makes warm-weather socializing irresistible. The 'work hard, play hard' label genuinely applies — academics are solid and students take them seriously, but the social infrastructure is so robust that even non-drinkers find a thriving scene. Jump Around during the third quarter of football games is unforgettable.

Situated on an isthmus between Lakes Mendota and Monona, the campus offers stunning lakefront views. Bascom Hill's tree-lined slope and the Memorial Union Terrace are quintessential college scenery.

Safety

Campus SafetySafe

UWPD operates 24/7 with WiscAlerts emergency notifications and the free SAFEwalk escort service. Most reported incidents are disciplinary actions; serious violent crime on campus is uncommon.

Neighborhood SafetySafe

Insider Tips
Grab a chair on the Memorial Union Terrace at sunset — the iconic sunburst chairs overlook Lake Mendota and the terrace serves beer, brats, and live music. This is THE Wisconsin experience, open April-September.
Visit the Geology Museum for free — it has a 33-foot Edmontosaurus skeleton, a walk-through limestone cave, and mineral displays that rival natural history museums, all completely free and uncrowded.
Climb Bascom Hill to the Abe Lincoln statue at the top — students rub his foot for good luck before exams. The steep climb gives you the classic UW view, and the statue's knee has been polished golden from decades of touching.
Explore the Chazen Museum of Art — the second-largest art collection in Wisconsin, free to the public, with works from ancient to contemporary. Most visitors to Madison have no idea it exists.
Walk out to Picnic Point on Lake Mendota — a mile-long peninsula that juts into the lake with fire pits, trails, and views of the Madison skyline. It's the most romantic/peaceful spot on any Big Ten campus.
Best Time to Visit

Visit September through October for gorgeous fall foliage around the lakes and game-day energy (Camp Randall on a football Saturday is electric). Late April through May is also excellent when the Terrace reopens and campus comes alive. Avoid December through February — Madison winters are brutal with sub-zero wind chills.

Getting There

Dane County Regional Airport (MSN) is about 20 minutes from campus on Madison's northeast side. Visitor parking available in university garages and city-run ramps (check real-time availability on the UW Transportation website). Allow 45-60 minutes to park and reach your destination. The campus stretches between two lakes, making parking tricky — budget extra time.
