Campus Beauty
Attractive

UConn's Storrs campus is isolated enough that the social scene is self-contained and thriving — Husky basketball is a near-religious experience, and the energy around March Madness runs is unmatched at most public universities. Greek life involves about 13% of students, and while frat parties drive weekend nightlife, the 700+ student organizations mean Greek membership is far from required. Academics are solidly demanding, especially in engineering, nursing, and the honors program.

The rural Storrs campus features a pleasant New England setting with Mirror Lake and recent construction upgrades, though a mix of architectural eras creates an uneven aesthetic.

Safety

Campus SafetySafe

UConn's Division of University Safety provides 24/7 policing, electronic dorm access, and emergency notification systems. Violent crime remains rare at the rural Storrs campus.

Neighborhood SafetyVery Safe

Storrs is a quiet, rural community in northeastern Connecticut with very low crime rates. Consistently ranked among the safest college settings in the country.

Based on Clery Act data, student surveys, and local crime statistics.

Insider Tips
Walk up Horsebarn Hill for sweeping campus views, then visit the farm animals (horses, sheep, cows) on Horsebarn Hill Road — it's a working agricultural campus and completely unique among top research universities
Get ice cream at the UConn Dairy Bar — 24+ flavors made from milk from UConn's own cows, recognized by Boston Globe and Yankee Magazine as one of New England's best ice cream destinations
Visit the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry — a hidden treasure with over 2,500 puppets from around the world, one of the only museums of its kind in America
Snap a selfie at the iconic UConn sign near the Student Union — it's the most popular student photo tradition and the quintessential UConn campus moment
Best Time to Visit

September-October when New England foliage is spectacular and campus is buzzing. Late April is also great with spring energy. Avoid home basketball game days (unless attending), move-in days (late August), and Parents Weekend (usually second weekend in October) — campus is packed and parking is scarce.

Getting There

Park in the North Garage or South Garage ($2-3/hr, payment via PayByPhone or Flowbird app — no cash). Pre-pay for 3 hours for a standard tour visit. Hartford-Bradley International Airport (BDL) is about 45 minutes away. Storrs is 25 miles east of Hartford, 100 miles southwest of Boston, 150 miles northeast of NYC.
