Campus Beauty
Beautiful

Lehigh's administration has been working to diversify the social scene beyond its historic Greek-and-beer reputation, but fraternities and athletics still play a significant role in the social landscape with about 21% going Greek. The hillside campus in Bethlehem, PA is beautiful but insular, and students not in Greek life or athletics can struggle to find their social footing.

Built dramatically into the wooded slopes of South Mountain overlooking Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with a mix of Gothic Revival stone buildings and forested hillside paths. The steep, terraced campus with mountain views creates a uniquely scenic and rugged setting.

Based on Niche reviews, Princeton Review surveys, student forums, and institutional data.

Safety

Campus SafetyVery Safe

No reported murders, robberies, weapons offenses, or arson from 2021-2023. The 26-officer accredited police department earned Premier Agency status in 2023.

Bethlehem's South Side neighborhood around campus is a revitalized area with restaurants and shops; overall a safe small-city environment.

Insider Tips
Drive up the hill past the fraternity and sorority houses to Rathbone Hall for 360-degree views of campus, Bethlehem, and the Lehigh Valley — most visitors only see the lower campus on the standard tour and miss the best panoramas.
Walk the Hoover-Mason Trestle at SteelStacks (10 min from campus) — a 2,000-foot elevated pathway in front of the decommissioned Bethlehem Steel blast furnaces. It's an extraordinary industrial landscape and completely free.
Eat at The Goose deli, a Lehigh student institution — the walls are covered in Lehigh memorabilia, owner Tony is the friendliest person in Bethlehem, and there's a secret menu worth looking up before you go.
Get homemade ice cream at The Cup on Farrington Square (on campus) — it's been a Bethlehem tradition for decades and the perfect reward after climbing Lehigh's hills.
Visit Lehigh Lookout at sunset for stunning views of the city and valley below — it's just minutes from campus and the city lights at night are equally impressive. Most prospective families don't know about this vantage point.
Best Time to Visit

October for peak fall foliage in the Lehigh Valley (the hillside campus is stunning in autumn), or April during Lehigh Fest events. Spring brings Musikfest preview events and campus is energetic. Avoid mid-December through January (winter break) and July-August. The hilly campus is harder to navigate in icy winter conditions.
