Campus Beauty
Beautiful

Cal Poly's 'Learn by Doing' motto means academics hit harder than students expect from a CSU — engineering and architecture programs are genuinely demanding. But San Luis Obispo's beach-town setting creates an unbeatable lifestyle balance: surf in the morning, lab all afternoon, house party at night. Greek life (~20%) exists but doesn't gatekeep the social scene.

Nestled among the volcanic morros and green hills of California's Central Coast, Cal Poly's Spanish-style architecture and surrounding ranch lands create a uniquely beautiful polytechnic campus. Mountain views, proximity to wine country, and the sunny SLO climate make it exceptionally attractive.

Insider Tips
Hike up to the 'P' on the hillside above campus for a panoramic photo op of the SLO skyline, the Pacific coast, and the surrounding hills -- it's a Cal Poly rite of passage.
Visit the Leaning Pine Arboretum and the Architecture Graveyard, where student-built experimental structures showcase the 'Learn by Doing' philosophy in tangible form.
Go to Downtown SLO Farmers' Market on Thursday nights -- live music, BBQ, local produce, and the entire town turns out. It's widely considered one of the best farmers' markets in California.
Check out the Shakespeare Press Museum in the Graphic Communication building -- a working collection of antique letterpress equipment that few visitors know about.
Best Time to Visit

Spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) offer ideal SLO weather in the 70s with stunning sunsets. Open House in April is the most energetic time to visit. Summer is warm and beautiful but campus is quieter. Avoid finals weeks in December and June.
