Campus Beauty
Beautiful

Colgate's remote Hamilton, NY location means the campus IS your world, and Greek life (about 32% of the student body) fills much of the social vacuum. The 'work hard, play hard' label fits perfectly — students grind through demanding coursework then blow off steam hard on weekends. The administration has been pushing alternatives to Greek dominance, but frat basements still anchor the weekend scene.

Perched on a hillside overlooking a pristine lake in rural upstate New York, Colgate's stately stone and brick buildings amid rolling green hills are consistently ranked among America's most beautiful campuses. Taylor Lake, the willow walk, and sweeping valley views make it genuinely stunning.

Based on Niche reviews, Princeton Review surveys, student forums, and institutional data.

Insider Tips
Walk the Willow Path along Taylor Lake -- legend says couples who share their first kiss on the Willow Path bridge are destined to marry. At year's end, students 'bury the hatchet' by tossing an axe into the lake.
Look for the number 13 everywhere: Colgate's address is 13 Oak Drive, its zip code (13346) starts and ends with digits summing to 13, and the school was founded by 13 men with 13 dollars and 13 prayers.
Visit the Picker Art Gallery in the Dana Arts Center -- free admission with 11,000+ pieces including old master paintings, Japanese woodblock prints, and rare Soviet wartime photographs by Yevgeny Khaldei.
Drive about 75 minutes to Cooperstown to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame, or stay local and try the tap room at Good Nature Farm Brewery, a farm-to-table brewery using all local ingredients.
Best Time to Visit

Fall foliage (late September through October) transforms the hilltop campus and Chenango Valley into a spectacular show. Visit when classes are in session to see students on the quad. Avoid the long winter (November-March) when Hamilton gets heavy snow and campus can feel isolated.

Getting There

Free visitor parking available; obtain a temporary permit online or from Campus Safety at 88 Hamilton Street upon arrival. Campus is 40 miles SE of Syracuse, 30 miles NW of Utica. Nearest airport: Syracuse Hancock (SYR, 50 min). No meaningful public transit -- a car is essential for reaching Hamilton.
