Campus Beauty
Beautiful

Richmond's unique lodge system replaces traditional frat houses — university-owned lodges serve as social hubs rather than residences, keeping Greek life integrated into campus. About 39% of students are affiliated, but the lodge system intentionally deemphasizes Greek exclusivity. Weekend social life is active and accessible, with the culture skewing preppy and well-resourced.

Widely regarded as one of America's most beautiful campuses, the Collegiate Gothic buildings are set around a pristine lake surrounded by 350 acres of rolling, wooded Virginia landscape designed by landscape architects.

Tour Resources
Insider Tips
Walk the loop around Westhampton Lake in the center of campus — it's consistently ranked among the most beautiful college settings in America, and the Gothic architecture reflected in the lake is postcard-perfect
Drive to Carytown after your tour (10 min) for eclectic boutique shopping and food — it's Richmond's beloved neighborhood strip that students frequent for everything from vintage clothes to Byrd Theatre ($2 second-run movies in a 1928 palace)
Visit the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (free admission, 15 min from campus) — it's one of the largest art museums in the US and a hidden gem that rivals museums in much bigger cities
If you have extra time, explore Belle Isle on the James River — students hike and kayak here regularly, and the river views with the Richmond skyline are spectacular
Best Time to Visit

Late September through November for gorgeous Virginia fall foliage on the wooded campus, or April through May for spring blooms. The campus is at its most beautiful in autumn. Avoid winter break and exam periods. Weekdays during the semester give the most authentic feel.
