Cost to Qualify
A two-year science master's typically adds about $41,000 in borrowing on top of a bachelor's, but the spread by field is about two and a half to one: chemistry graduates borrow a median of $25,000, geosciences $31,000, general biology $35,500, genetics $41,000, bioinformatics $47,000, and ecology, evolution and marine biology $62,600 - the most expensive of the lot. Read that spread as indicative rather than measured: the figures come from the federal Scorecard and several rest on a handful of programmes, one for genetics and two for chemistry. Unlike a PhD, an assistantship that waives tuition is something you might win, not something to count on; plan to pay unless a specific programme puts funding in writing before you accept.
Sticker price, not what most people pay — scholarships, aid and in-state status all move it. Room and board is shown separately on each college's page. Where no body publishes a tuition average we show what graduates borrow instead, and say so — that figure leaves out anyone who did not borrow, so it is not the same measure as a tuition price.

Restoration jobs exist today, but 'rewilding project manager' has no government job code, so we lean on the nearest one, conservation scientists, and on policy targets.
The core of the job is out on the land: agreeing plans with farmers, landowners, communities and agencies, running field crews, and adjusting as nature responds. AI can help with the desk side, like monitoring data and reports, but it cannot do the negotiating or the field work. The two AI-company studies of job exposure disagree about the nearest occupation. Microsoft's 2025 study puts conservation scientists in the middle of 785 jobs (363rd), about the same place it puts electricians. Anthropic's March 2026 study, which tracks what people actually use its Claude AI for at work, found no measurable use for conservation scientists' tasks at all.
Demand is where the projection comes in. Under the 2022 global biodiversity agreement, countries committed to having at least 30% of degraded land and water 'under effective restoration' by 2030. The EU's Nature Restoration Regulation requires restoration measures across at least 20% of EU land and sea by 2030, including returning 25,000 km of rivers to free flow, and EU countries are due to submit national restoration plans by September 2026. These are targets, not hiring data, and targets can slip. In the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects conservation scientist jobs to grow 5% from 2025 to 2035.
We keep this at 1 (Minimal), though it is close to the line with 2. What would change the score: if restoration groups start using AI to plan and monitor projects with noticeably smaller teams, this would move to 2. If governments pull back from restoration targets, the job would shrink, but that is a funding risk, not an AI one.
