Environmental Engineer

Environmental engineers design the systems that keep water, air and soil clean: water treatment plants, air pollution controls, waste handling and the cleanup of contaminated sites. A lot of the job happens at a desk. BLS lists preparing and reviewing environmental reports, keeping permits and plans up to date, and analyzing scientific data among the main duties. That kind of work is where AI is making the fastest progress. A 2025 Microsoft Research study measured how much of each job's tasks AI chatbots can help with, using 200,000 real conversations. Environmental engineers ranked 226th of 785 jobs, in the top 29%, almost exactly level with civil engineers (232nd), whom we also rate 3. Routine modeling and report writing is also the work new engineers usually learn on, so if teams need fewer people for it, new graduates feel it first.

It is not higher because the job is tied to real places and legal responsibility. Environmental engineers inspect plants and work at construction and cleanup sites, and experienced engineers earn a Professional Engineer license that lets them sign off on projects. Demand is steady: BLS projects 6% growth from 2025 to 2035, faster than the average for all jobs, as people worry more about pollution and access to clean drinking water. But it is a small field, with only about 2,300 openings a year nationwide.
