Sustainability Consultant

Sustainability consultants help companies measure and cut their environmental impact: counting carbon emissions, writing sustainability reports and strategies, and keeping up with environmental rules and standards. Much of that is desk work with data and documents, which is where AI is strongest. The government files sustainability consultants under a catch-all group of business specialists, and a 2025 Microsoft Research study that measured how much of each job's tasks AI chatbots can help with put that group in the top 27% of 785 jobs. Advising clients, judging how changing rules affect them, and persuading executives to act are harder to hand to AI.

Getting in is already hard, for reasons beyond AI. Trellis, a sustainability business publication, reported in 2025 that leading consultancies "regularly receive between 1,000 and 5,000 resumes per open position," despite what it called "current ESG headwinds," and that most firms now use AI to help pick which candidates to look at. The firms said strong candidates know how to use AI tools in their work. BLS does not track sustainability consultants separately. Its closest group, environmental scientists and specialists, includes consultants who help businesses cut waste and pollution and follow regulations, and is projected to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, faster than average, with about 7,300 openings a year.

That fits the rubric's "3 Moderate": AI does meaningful parts of the work, and the entry level is tight. What would change this score. If consultancies cut junior analyst roles as AI takes over emissions accounting and report drafting, this goes to 4. If new reporting rules create more work than AI saves and junior hiring grows, it could come down to 2.
