We read this job as a licensed counselor who specialises in brain-training technology, because the job our salary figures are based on is mental health counseling. Under that reading the master's is the law, not our opinion. BLS says all states require mental health counselors to be licensed and that they typically need a master's degree. O*NET's survey found 89% of new hires need one. The license is also what lets you work with clients who have ADHD, anxiety or another diagnosed condition. The Biofeedback Certification International Alliance says using neurofeedback to treat a disorder requires a state license, or working under someone who has one. The cost shown below is for a social work master's (MSW), the nearest licensure-track degree we price. A clinical mental health counseling master's is the more usual route and is not in our cost data yet.
What would change our mind: Move this to Bachelor's if neuro-enhancement work settles as performance coaching for healthy clients, with BCIA's unlicensed BCN-P route becoming the usual entry in neurotech or neurofeedback job postings. If states create a license specific to this work, follow that license instead.

Apex is a Director of Cognitive Enhancement Programs blending counseling and program management (cf. Social & Community Service Managers 90th pct $132K), ~$150K total comp. Roughly 5% reach director level as BCI/neurotech matures (speculative/emerging field, no BLS code).

Cost to Qualify
A two-year CSWE-accredited MSW after your bachelor's costs about $17,000 in tuition at a public university — the California State system charges $8,548 a year for graduate study — and can reach $121,500 at the most expensive private, Columbia, which charges $30,382 a semester. Most students land between those: NCES puts average graduate tuition at $12,596 a year public and $29,931 private nonprofit, so roughly $25K to $60K for the two years. The biggest single lever is public vs. private, not programme prestige. Advanced-standing programmes, for students who already hold a CSWE-accredited BSW, replace the first year with a shorter summer term and cost correspondingly less.

AI Risk Assessment
A neuro-enhancement counselor would advise healthy people on ways to boost their brains, such as neurofeedback, brain implants and supplements, and help them weigh the risks. This is a projected job. The technology it depends on is still mostly medical: STAT reported in December 2025 that brain-implant trials are growing from single digits to dozens of patients, so far mostly to help people with paralysis or ALS communicate, with some companies starting to target mental-health symptoms. There are no workers to count yet, so most of this score is projection.
The closest real job is counseling. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects jobs for substance abuse, behavioral disorder and mental health counselors to grow about 18% from 2025 to 2035, far faster than the 3.5% average. AI is starting to reach this kind of work. In a 2025 trial published in NEJM AI, 210 adults with depression, anxiety or eating-disorder risk who used a generative AI therapy chatbot for four weeks improved more than people on a waitlist, and rated their bond with the chatbot about as highly as people rate human therapists. That trial compared the chatbot with no treatment, not with a human counselor.
We keep this at 2 (Low). The data side of the job, reading device data and tracking results, is work AI does well, and chatbots can already give basic support. But the core, helping someone decide whether to change their own brain, rests on trust and judgment, and demand for human counseling is growing fast. What would change the score: AI health assistants becoming the normal way people get this kind of advice, or trials showing chatbots matching human counselors, would push it to 3.
