Cost to Qualify
DPT is a 3-year doctorate on top of a bachelor's. APTA's own PTCAS Total Cost of Education Comparison lists the whole-programme price for every accredited programme, and the average across them is $109,554 for an in-state student and $129,129 for an out-of-state one. That is lower than the widely-cited debt figures ($140-170K median at graduation, up to $220K+ at the priciest private programs) because debt figures roll in accrued interest and living costs borrowed, which we deliberately exclude. Using the tuition-only sticker, the cost-to-salaryEntry ratio ($75K starting pay) is about 1.5-1.7x - under the 2.0 flag line, even though this credential is commonly assumed to be a debt-heavy one; the debt figures, not the tuition sticker, are what drive that reputation.

AI Risk Assessment
Physical therapy is hands-on work: assessing how someone moves, guiding them through exercises, using manual therapy, and keeping patients motivated through months of recovery. AI can help around the edges, with writing up session notes, suggesting home exercise programs, and analyzing movement from video, but it cannot do the treatment itself. A 2025 Microsoft Research study measured how much of each job's tasks AI chatbots can help with, using 200,000 real conversations. Physical therapists came out 308th of 785 jobs, a little above the middle. The part AI reaches is mostly documentation and patient education.
Demand is strong and growing. BLS projects physical therapist jobs to grow 12% from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all jobs, with about 13,400 openings a year. The reasons are an aging population, more chronic conditions like diabetes and back pain, and a push to treat pain without opioids. That is the rubric's "2 Low": AI takes some of the paperwork, and growing demand absorbs the time it saves. It is not a 1 because the paperwork and education share of the job is real, and AI is getting better at both.
What would change this score. If insurers start paying for AI-guided home programs in place of in-person visits, or clinics hire fewer new therapists while demand keeps rising, it goes to 3. If AI stays a note-taking and planning aid, it could drop to 1.
