Campus Beauty
Beautiful

WashU is sometimes called a 'country club' — the campus is immaculate, the dorms are palatial, and students are driven but not cutthroat. Greek life provides social structure without dominating it. The 'WashU bubble' is real: the gorgeous campus can feel insular from St. Louis, and finding off-campus social life requires more effort than at urban schools.

Collegiate Gothic red granite buildings along Brookings Quadrangle, the iconic Brookings Hall archway, and 169 beautifully landscaped acres consistently place WashU among the nation's most beautiful campuses in Princeton Review rankings.

Based on Niche reviews, Princeton Review surveys, student forums, and institutional data.

Safety

Campus SafetyVery Safe

WashU Police Department has 42 commissioned officers plus a Neighborhood Patrol Unit covering off-campus housing areas. The Danforth Campus has very low crime rates.

Neighborhood SafetySafe

The Clayton and Skinker-DeBaliviere neighborhoods around WashU are affluent and safe, distinct from St. Louis's higher-crime areas. The campus is well-buffered from north city neighborhoods.

Based on Clery Act data, student surveys, and local crime statistics.

Insider Tips
When you walk through the Brookings Hall archway, look down -- there are two university seals in the floor. The superstition says stepping on the small one guarantees you won't graduate on time, and the large one is risky too. Watch WashU students instinctively dance around them.
Find 'The Bunny' (officially 'Thinker on a Rock' by Barry Flanagan) near Graham Chapel -- it's a bronze rabbit sitting in Rodin's 'Thinker' pose, and it's a satirical reminder not to take yourself too seriously. It's become an unofficial mascot and a favorite photo op. Students rub its nose before exams for luck.
Walk to the 1904 Olympic Field -- WashU's Francis Field hosted the 1904 Summer Olympics (the only Olympics ever held on a college campus). The original entrance gates are still standing. Most people, including many WashU students, have no idea they walk past an actual Olympic venue every day.
Cross Skinker Boulevard to Forest Park, the 1,371-acre park where the 1904 World's Fair was held. The St. Louis Zoo, Art Museum, Science Center, and History Museum are all free (yes, free) and within walking distance of campus. It's one of the biggest perks of WashU's location that prospective students consistently underestimate.
Best Time to Visit

September-October (gorgeous fall color on the Collegiate Gothic campus) or April-May (dogwoods and azaleas blooming). Avoid July-August (St. Louis heat and humidity). WILD (Walk In, Lay Down -- WashU's annual spring concert) is a highlight. Homecoming and Family Weekend in fall bring good energy.
