Campus Beauty
Stunning

Notre Dame has no Greek life — instead, your single-sex dorm is your fraternity or sorority for all four years, complete with rivalries, formals, charity events, and hand signs. Football Saturdays are a quasi-religious experience, from the midnight drummer circle to Touchdown Jesus, creating a communal energy that's hard to replicate. Parietals (opposite-sex visitor curfews) are controversial but real, pushing social life into dorm common areas and campus-wide events.

The gleaming Golden Dome, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Touchdown Jesus on Hesburgh Library, manicured grounds, and twin lakes create a campus with almost unmatched iconic grandeur and spiritual atmosphere.

Safety

Campus SafetyVery Safe

Notre Dame Police Department is a fully authorized Indiana police agency providing 24/7 campus patrols across the self-contained 1,250-acre campus. The isolated setting and strong community culture contribute to very low on-campus crime.

Neighborhood SafetyModerate

South Bend has above-average crime rates. While the campus itself is insulated, students venturing off campus into South Bend should exercise caution, particularly at night.

Based on Clery Act data, student surveys, and local crime statistics.

Insider Tips
Visit the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes after dark -- this replica (1/7th the size of the original in France) is where students light candles before exams, games, and major life moments. At night, the hundreds of flickering candles against the stone create an atmosphere that even non-religious visitors find deeply moving. You can touch the stone from the actual Lourdes shrine in France.
Go to the 14th floor of Hesburgh Library for a panoramic campus view, then walk outside to see 'Touchdown Jesus' -- the massive Word of Life mural faces the north end zone of Notre Dame Stadium, and with arms raised, Jesus appears to be signaling a touchdown. But find the lesser-known statues too: 'First Down Moses' (next to the library), 'Fair Catch Corby' (near the Basilica), and 'The Holy Hand-off' (near Bond Hall) -- students have given them all football nicknames.
Eat in South Dining Hall, which looks like the Great Hall from Harry Potter. The Gothic architecture, long wooden tables, and vaulted ceilings make it one of the most spectacular dining halls in the country. If you can get a student to swipe you in, it's unforgettable.
Visit the Golden Dome at sunset when the actual gold leaf catches the light. Then walk to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart (gorgeous neo-Gothic interior, open to visitors) and find the Log Chapel behind it -- a tiny replica of the original 1830s chapel that was the first permanent structure at Notre Dame.
Best Time to Visit

Football Saturdays in fall (September-November) are the ultimate Notre Dame experience -- the campus transforms with tailgating, the band march, and the 'Play Like a Champion Today' energy. Spring (April-May) is beautiful and calmer. Avoid January-February (South Bend winters are harsh). Bookstore Basketball (spring outdoor tournament) is a beloved tradition.
