Campus Beauty
Functional

UB is a large research university where social life requires intentional effort — the suburban North Campus can feel spread out, and Greek life is a modest presence that doesn't define the culture. The 500+ student organizations, Division I sports, and proximity to downtown Buffalo provide plenty of options, but you won't stumble into a vibrant scene without seeking it out.

The main North Campus is a sprawling 1970s Brutalist and modernist complex designed by a single architectural plan, resulting in a functional but stark suburban feel. While the older South Campus has more traditional charm, the primary campus is utilitarian.

Based on Niche reviews, Princeton Review surveys, student forums, and institutional data.

Safety

Campus SafetySafe

UB's on-campus crime rates are consistently very low and have decreased significantly. The state-accredited University Police department provides around-the-clock service.

Neighborhood SafetySafe

UB's North Campus is in Amherst, one of the safest cities in the U.S. The South Campus in University Heights has seen more neighborhood crime, but partnerships have improved conditions.

Based on Clery Act data, student surveys, and local crime statistics.

Insider Tips
Visit Baird Point on North Campus, where rescued columns from Buffalo's old Federal Reserve Bank tower over Lake LaSalle, a serene 60-acre lake in the middle of campus -- perfect for a reflective walk.
Explore Abbott Library in South Campus with its handcarved mantelpiece, antique chandeliers, and custom woodwork from the same company that furnished the White House.
Head to the Jacobs School of Medicine downtown -- the six-story glass atrium is architecturally stunning, and the connecting bridges five stories up provide a vertigo-inducing view.
Grab lunch at One World Cafe with alumna Harumo Sato's bold ceiling artwork, then photograph the Bronze Bison statue in front of the Center for the Arts -- modeled after an iconic original from Buffalo's Central Terminal.
Best Time to Visit

September through October offers beautiful fall foliage and lively campus energy with football season. Late April through May is also pleasant. Buffalo winters (November-March) are notoriously harsh with lake-effect snow -- visit during warmer months unless you want the 'authentic' experience.
