Campus Experience

Campus Beauty
Attractive

Rochester students describe themselves as 'chill nerds' — academically intense but genuinely collaborative, with pre-meds sharing notes instead of hiding them. Greek affiliation is higher on paper than it feels socially; freshmen can't even pledge in fall. The open curriculum attracts intellectually curious students who'd rather debate philosophy at 2 AM than rage at a frat house, and the upstate New York winters keep everyone bonded indoors.

Compact campus along the Genesee River with handsome Georgian-style brick buildings around the Eastman Quad, pleasant and well-maintained but not widely celebrated for visual impact.

Safety

Campus SafetySafe

The self-contained River Campus is well-secured with its own Department of Public Safety, though there has been a recent uptick in car break-ins and crimes of opportunity.

Neighborhood SafetyModerate

Rochester has above-average crime rates. While the immediate campus area and College Town are well-patrolled, surrounding neighborhoods can be less safe after dark.

Based on Clery Act data, student surveys, and local crime statistics.

Tour Resources
Insider Tips
Explore the underground tunnels below Eastman Quad — students paint the tunnel walls to advertise clubs and events, creating a colorful, ever-changing gallery that captures real campus culture
Visit Sibley Music Library at the Eastman School of Music downtown — it has original works by Beethoven and Mozart, plus soundproof listening rooms, and is one of the finest music libraries in the country
Catch the sunset from the Interfaith Chapel's river level — when the light hits the windows at just the right angle, the view of the Genesee River is breathtaking
Take the Blue Line shuttle to College Town for food and shopping, then walk to Highland Park in spring when thousands of lilacs bloom (the famous Lilac Festival happens every May)
Best Time to Visit

Late September through October for beautiful fall colors, or mid-April through May when the Lilac Festival brings the city alive. Campus is most energetic during the academic year. Avoid January-February when Rochester winters are harsh and grey.

Getting There

Stop at the Visitor Parking and Information Booth on Wilson Blvd for parking instructions — on busy visit days, off-campus parking may be needed (details in confirmation email). Use 252 Elmwood Ave as your GPS address. Rochester Airport (ROC) is just 2 miles from campus — taxi, Uber/Lyft, or car rental all quick options. Use 655 Faculty Rd for Uber drop-off.
