Campus Beauty
Attractive

Brandeis punches well above its weight academically — the pre-med track is exceptional, and the research culture rivals schools twice its size. Greek life is essentially nonexistent, and the social scene is quiet, intellectual, and heavily oriented around social justice activism. The Waltham campus can feel isolated, and students who need a vibrant nightlife will find it lacking.

A 235-acre wooded campus in Waltham with a mix of mid-century modern and Brutalist buildings that reflect its rapid 1950s-60s expansion. The natural landscape is lovely with rolling hills and ponds, but the concrete architecture can feel dated.

Safety

Campus SafetySafe

Crime on the enclosed suburban campus is rare. A 2024 Pedestrian Campus Safety Initiative added LED crosswalk lights, and university police provide 24/7 patrols.

Neighborhood SafetyVery Safe

Located on a wooded hilltop in Waltham, the surrounding area is a quiet, low-crime suburb with residential neighborhoods.

Insider Tips
Visit the Rose Art Museum (free admission) — founded in 1961, it holds 9,000+ works of modern and contemporary art including pieces by Warhol, de Kooning, and Lichtenstein. Student-led 45-minute tours of current exhibitions are available.
Find the 'Light of Reason' sculpture at the Rose Museum entrance — 24 lampposts by artist Chris Burden fan out from the building in three rows, creating a stunning gateway that's become Brandeis's most photographed landmark.
Take the university shuttle to downtown Waltham's Moody Street for dining — Game Underground (arcade with 80 credits for $10), Little India Restaurant, and Enzina's Pizzeria (since 1979) are all student favorites near the shuttle stop.
The Brandeis campus is built around a former country estate — the wooded 235 acres have hidden walking trails and scenic hilltop viewpoints that reward exploration beyond the standard tour route.
Catch a performance at the Spingold Theater Center — Brandeis's theater program produces high-quality shows and the center has its own art displays. Check the calendar before your visit.
Best Time to Visit

October through November for New England fall foliage on the wooded campus, or March through April. Visit when classes are in session to get a true feel for the intellectual energy. Avoid mid-December through January (winter break) and summer when campus is quiet. Visit twice if serious about enrolling.
