Oberlin banned fraternities in 1847 and hasn't looked back — the co-op housing system is the social backbone, where students cook communal meals and build intentional community. The social scene revolves around concerts (the Conservatory ensures world-class music is constant), activism, and art rather than traditional college parties. It's the most politically progressive campus on this list by a wide margin, which is either exhilarating or exhausting depending on your perspective.

An eclectic mix of Victorian, modernist, and contemporary architecture including Minoru Yamasaki's conservatory buildings, with Tappan Square providing a pleasant green anchor but the overall aesthetic varying widely.

Neighborhood SafetySafe

The small town of Oberlin has moderate property crime rates somewhat above average for its size, though violent crime remains relatively low.

Insider Tips
Visit the Allen Memorial Art Museum -- consistently ranked among the top 5 college art museums in the country, with works by Monet, Matisse, Picasso, and Calder in a stunning Cass Gilbert-designed building. Free admission, always.
Tour the Weltzheimer/Johnson House -- the first Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian house in Ohio (1949), available for $5 guided tours. It's an architectural pilgrimage site hiding in a small Ohio town.
Eat at Slow Train Cafe (owned by an alum) for the best chai latte in town, then stay for Thursday night trivia -- it's where town and gown mix. Bead Paradise next door is a wonderland of crystals and stones worth browsing.
Ask about OSCA (Oberlin Student Cooperative Association) -- nearly a quarter of students cook, clean, and self-govern in co-ops. Harkness Co-op hosts a Jellyfish Parade every full moon and mandatory frolicking in the rain. It's unlike anything at any other college.
Catch a free Conservatory performance -- there are 500+ events per year on this small campus, from orchestral concerts to jazz and experimental music. Check the events calendar before your visit.
Best Time to Visit

September-October for beautiful fall weather and full cultural programming. April for admitted student events (All Roads Lead to Oberlin). Summer Visit Days in June-July are well-organized. Avoid January-February when northeast Ohio winters are bleak.
