AI Risk Assessment
Trust and safety teams keep harmful content, fraud and abuse off online platforms. The front line of that work, reviewing posts one by one, is where AI has hit hardest. In October 2024 TikTok laid off hundreds of staff, most of them content moderators, and said 80% of the content it removes for breaking its rules was already taken down by automated systems (Reuters). By August 2025 the company put that figure above 85% and announced cuts that put several hundred UK trust and safety jobs at risk as it moved to AI-assisted moderation (AFP). A month earlier, staff from its 150-person trust and safety department in Berlin protested what they said was a plan to close the department and replace them with AI.
Not all of the shrinking is AI. TikTok said the UK work would also move to other European offices and outside contractors. Platformer's report from TrustCon, the trust and safety professionals' conference, in July 2025, describes rolling layoffs at Meta, Google and Microsoft, and it blames much of the retreat on politics: Elon Musk gutting moderation at X, Meta following in a milder way, and pressure from US lawmakers. Workers there told Platformer their jobs 'remain mostly the same', and new child-safety and age-check laws gave them fresh work, including building the AI systems that spot grooming.
We keep this at 3 (Moderate). This career is the policy, investigation and systems side of trust and safety, not the review queue. That side still needs people, and new laws add work. But in our reading, reviewing content is where many people start in this field, and that is the part AI is taking over, so expect fewer entry-level openings. There is no government job code for this work, so we have no official count of whether the field as a whole is growing or shrinking.
What would change the score: platforms cutting policy and investigations staff, not just moderators, and naming AI as the reason, would move this to 4. New laws that make platforms hire more human reviewers and specialists would move it to 2.
