Forget fraternities — Princeton's social scene runs on its 11 eating clubs along Prospect Avenue ('the Street'), where ~75% of upperclassmen eventually join. Six clubs use a selective admission process called 'bicker' that can feel cutthroat, while five are open sign-in. The eating clubs throw the parties, host the formals, and serve the meals, creating a social system that's uniquely Princeton and occasionally cliquey.

Collegiate Gothic spires, ivy-covered stone walls, Nassau Hall's storied facade, and meticulously landscaped grounds with mature trees make Princeton consistently ranked among the most beautiful campuses in the country.

Insider Tips
Find the secret walled garden hidden between Nassau Hall, Maclean House, and Stanhope Hall -- it's slightly overgrown and ancient-feeling, tucked behind brick walls and ivy, and virtually invisible from the main paths. It feels like stepping into a forgotten corner of Oxford.
Attend a free a cappella 'Arch Sing' under Blair Arch -- Princeton's a cappella groups (the Nassoons, Tigertones, etc.) historically perform outdoor concerts under the campus arches. Check event boards for dates; it's one of Princeton's most charming traditions and a window into real student culture.
Walk the Tow Path along Lake Carnegie to the dam at the far end for a serene, panoramic view of the entire lake. The path is where crew teams practice and students run. At the Forbes residential college, look for the red Adirondack chairs and hammocks in the backyard -- a beloved hidden hangout.
Don't leave without peeking inside the Princeton University Chapel -- it's the third-largest university chapel in the world with stunning stained glass. Then walk through FitzRandolph Gate (the main ceremonial entrance on Nassau Street), but know the superstition: students avoid walking out through it until graduation day, believing it brings bad luck.
Best Time to Visit

October (fall foliage on the Gothic campus is jaw-dropping) or April-May (Reunions in late May are legendary but chaotic). Visit on weekdays during the academic year for the full experience. Avoid winter break and summer -- the eating clubs on Prospect Avenue are only buzzing during the school year. The Princeton farmers market (May-November, near the public library) is a great add-on.

Getting There

Visitor parking in Stadium Drive Garage (Sweetgum Rd) on weekdays 7am-4pm -- register for a free daily permit online or at the garage. After 4pm and weekends, park in any numbered lot. TigerTransit shuttle runs from the garage to campus. From NYC Penn Station: NJ Transit to Princeton Junction, then the 'Dinky' shuttle train (4 min) directly to campus. Check the Dinky schedule -- it doesn't meet every train.
