Campus Beauty
Beautiful

Chapel Hill's charm is that the social scene extends seamlessly beyond campus — Franklin Street is the living room of student social life, and basketball culture (especially the Duke rivalry) creates electric communal moments that no fraternity party can match. About 20% go Greek and it matters for some circles, but the vibe is relaxed enough that non-Greek students don't feel shut out. The Southern hospitality is real, and the creative arts scene adds unexpected depth.

The oldest public university campus features elegant Federal and Georgian brick buildings shaded by massive hardwoods. The Old Well, McCorkle Place, and Polk Place create a timeless Southern charm.

Insider Tips
Take a sip from the Old Well on your first visit — this neoclassical rotunda at the northern campus entrance has a drinking fountain inside, and tradition says drinking from it on your first day of class guarantees a 4.0 GPA.
Visit the Morehead Planetarium where NASA astronauts actually trained for the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions — it was the first planetarium on a U.S. university campus, and you can still catch public shows.
Hang out in The Pit, Carolina's sunken brick courtyard — it's the campus 'living room' where student orgs recruit, performers play, and preachers preach. You'll see the full spectrum of UNC culture in 15 minutes.
Walk Franklin Street, the 'Heartbeat of Chapel Hill' — after any big men's basketball win (especially over Duke), thousands of students flood the street in a spontaneous celebration. The street also has Top of the Hill restaurant with great views.
Explore the Ackland Art Museum at the corner of Franklin Street — free admission, 20,000+ works, and it's right at the campus edge where you can feel the town-gown connection that makes Chapel Hill special.
Best Time to Visit

Visit late March through April when dogwoods and azaleas bloom across campus, or October for beautiful fall weather. A home football Saturday or basketball game day (November-March) gives you the full Carolina experience. Avoid late December through mid-January (winter break) and summer when campus is much quieter.

Getting There

Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is 18 miles away (~25 min drive via I-40 West).
