Campus Beauty
Beautiful

The quarter system's relentless 10-week pace creates a pressure cooker where midterms feel like they never stop, making the social scene more weekend-concentrated than at semester schools. Greek life has historically involved ~35-40% of students and heavily shapes the party scene, though recent years have seen declining participation. Evanston offers a quieter college-town feel with Chicago's world-class city just an L-train ride away.

A lakefront campus along Lake Michigan with Gothic and modern architecture, scenic paths along the lakeshore, and the striking Weber Arch entrance create a beautiful setting enhanced by dramatic seasonal changes.

Safety

Campus SafetyVery Safe

Northwestern University Police provides community patrols, the NUGuardian safety app, Safe Ride service, and electronic dorm access. Day-to-day risk is primarily limited to bicycle and scooter theft.

Neighborhood SafetySafe

The neighborhoods near Northwestern's lakefront campus are among the safest in Evanston, though areas in south Evanston have higher crime rates.

Based on Clery Act data, student surveys, and local crime statistics.

Insider Tips
Guard The Rock. Northwestern's most iconic tradition: a large quartzite boulder (gift of the class of 1902) that students paint with messages, club promotions, and proposals. The rule is you must guard it for 24 hours straight before you earn the right to paint it. Visit at any time to see the latest layer of the thousands of coats of paint that have accumulated since the 1940s.
Walk the Lakefill at sunset -- this man-made peninsula jutting into Lake Michigan was built in the 1960s from construction debris and is now one of the most beautiful spots in Evanston. Students paint messages on the lakefront rocks, proposals are common, and on a clear day you can see the Chicago skyline. It's Northwestern's unofficial emotional center.
Find 'The Nest' -- hanging egg chairs in the basement of Shepard Hall that students use for napping and studying. Also check the SOURCE room on the 3rd floor of Norris University Center for a hidden study spot with panoramic Lakefill views that most visitors (and many students) don't know about.
Take the CTA Purple Line one stop south to downtown Evanston for incredible food: Andy's Frozen Custard is a student staple, and Evanston has a surprisingly great restaurant scene. Or ride 30 minutes to downtown Chicago on the L -- Northwestern is the only elite university where you can be in a world-class city center in under an hour by public transit.
Best Time to Visit

September-October (beautiful fall on Lake Michigan, football season) or April-May (campus comes alive after Chicago winter). Avoid January-February (brutal lakefront wind and cold). Dillo Day, Northwestern's student-run music festival (late May), is the biggest event of the year. The Lakefill is most magical at sunset.

Getting There

Visitor parking at South Campus Parking Garage (near Segal Visitors Center) and North Campus Parking Garage. CTA Purple Line stops at Davis, Foster, and Noyes stations -- all walkable to campus. From O'Hare: Pace Bus #250 to Davis Station (~1 hr, $1.75), or taxi/rideshare (~30 min, ~$35-45). Metra Union Pacific North Line also stops in Evanston.
