Campus Beauty
Stunning

Duke's identity is inseparable from basketball — tenting in Krzyzewskiville for weeks to get Cameron Indoor seats is a rite of passage, and game days unify the entire campus. Greek life is significant (~37% of undergrads), and fraternities historically dominated the party scene, though the new QuadEx residential system is deliberately trying to shift that. The Southern setting, gorgeous campus, and 'work hard, play hard' ethos attract students who want elite academics without sacrificing a social life.

The towering Gothic Duke Chapel, stone quadrangles of West Campus designed by Julian Abele, and the 55-acre Sarah P. Duke Gardens set among North Carolina pines create one of the most breathtaking campuses in America.

Safety

Campus SafetyVery Safe

Duke Police has approximately 70 officers providing 24/7 patrols across the self-contained, wooded 8,600-acre campus. Electronic access controls, blue-light phones, and late-night transportation keep on-campus crime rates very low.

Neighborhood SafetySafe

Durham has higher-than-average city-wide crime rates, but the neighborhoods immediately surrounding Duke are among the safest in the city due to university investment and enhanced police presence.

Based on Clery Act data, student surveys, and local crime statistics.

Insider Tips
Go inside Duke Chapel at 8am and walk to the back -- the 77 stained glass windows, 50-bell carillon, and 210-foot tower make it one of the most breathtaking university buildings in America. On sunny mornings, the light through the windows creates an otherworldly effect. Free organ recitals happen regularly -- check the schedule.
Visit the Duke Lemur Center -- the world's largest sanctuary for rare and endangered prosimian primates, home to 200+ animals across more than a dozen species. It's the only place in the world you can see many of these species outside Madagascar. Tours must be booked in advance and sell out fast -- book the moment registration opens.
Walk the Sarah P. Duke Gardens (55 acres, free) early in the morning when the Roney Fountain catches the sunrise. Head down the main entrance walkway for the best light -- a crane sculpture atop the fountain spits water that creates shimmering reflections at sunrise. In spring, the gardens are a riot of azaleas, tulips, and cherry blossoms.
Catch a basketball game at Cameron Indoor Stadium if humanly possible. The Cameron Crazies student section is legendary -- they camp in tents in Krzyzewskiville (K-ville) for weeks before big games. Even if you can't get tickets, walking through K-ville during tent-up season gives you a visceral sense of Duke's culture.
Best Time to Visit

March-April (Duke Gardens in full bloom, basketball season winding up) or September-October (beautiful weather, football energy). Avoid summer and winter break. If you visit during basketball season (November-March), try to time it around a home game for maximum campus energy. The best day trip add-on is a meal at The Pit in downtown Durham for legendary NC BBQ.

Getting There

Free visitor parking in the gravel lot on Duke University Road across from Karsh Alumni Center. Additional paid visitor parking in garages and lots around campus.
