Co-op is the defining feature of Northeastern social life — your best friends will disappear for six months at a time on work rotations, and you'll do the same, creating a revolving-door social dynamic unlike any other school. About 16% go Greek, but Boston's city laws mean no Greek houses, keeping the scene low-key. The upside is extraordinary professional maturity; the downside is that deep, four-year friendships require real effort to maintain.

A 73-acre urban campus that has undergone significant modernization with sleek new buildings alongside older brick structures. The central quad and proximity to the Fenway area are pleasant, though the campus still feels like a work in progress architecturally.

Safety

Campus SafetySafe

Total on-campus reports are modest with declining hate crimes and very few burglaries. The fully commissioned NUPD provides 24/7 coverage across a compact campus.

Neighborhood SafetySafe

Located in Boston's Fenway/Roxbury area, which is generally safe and well-patrolled but sees occasional property crime typical of an urban neighborhood.

Insider Tips
Ask about the underground tunnel system — 16,705 square feet of tunnels connect 11 buildings (including Cabot Gym, Dodge Hall, and Snell Library), letting students escape Boston's brutal winters. It's one of campus's best-kept secrets.
Find the Cy Young statue tucked away on a patch of green space — it marks the site of the original pitcher's mound where the first World Series was played in 1903, right where Northeastern's campus now sits.
Visit the Museum of Fine Arts (practically on campus) and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (a 5-minute walk) — the Gardner's Venetian-style courtyard is one of Boston's most stunning spaces, and students get discounted admission.
Grab coffee and pastries at Tatte on Huntington Avenue, the go-to campus cafe — then walk 10 minutes to Newbury Street for Boston's best shopping, dining, and people-watching.
Ask your tour guide about co-op stories — Northeastern's 6-month paid co-op program is the school's defining feature, and hearing first-hand experiences (NASA, Google, UN) makes the model click in a way brochures can't.
Best Time to Visit

October through November for peak campus energy and fall foliage, or March through April when students return from co-ops and campus is buzzing. Weekday mid-morning visits let you see classes in session. Avoid late December through January (winter break) and June-August when co-op rotations thin the on-campus population.

Getting There

West Village Parking Garage is complimentary for prospective students/families. Renaissance Parking Garage available for general visitors (fee).
