The University of Louisville is Kentucky's metropolitan public research university, spread across a park-like Belknap campus just south of downtown plus a separate Health Sciences campus in the city's medical district. Its engineering school, the J.B. Speed School, has required every undergraduate to complete three semesters of paid co-op since 1926 — students graduate with a year of real employment already on the CV. The College of Business runs the only undergraduate equine business program in the world housed inside an AACSB-accredited business school, a mile and a quarter from Churchill Downs. UofL is heavily a commuter university — only about a quarter of undergraduates live in university housing — and it climbed 21 places in the 2026 US News national rankings, its best-ever showing.

Campus Experience
UofL is a commuter university first — about 26% of undergraduates live in university housing, though 64% of first-years do, so the freshman year feels more residential than the campus as a whole. Greek life is modest (about 14% of men, 10% of women) and the social center of gravity is athletics: the ACC move put Louisville basketball and football against Duke, Carolina and Florida State, and the city itself, with Churchill Downs and the Derby, supplies an enormous amount of the social calendar. Academics are manageable outside Speed School and nursing.
Belknap is genuinely park-like — the university's own word for it — with mature trees, open lawns and the Grawemeyer Hall clock tower as the anchor. An original cast of Rodin's The Thinker sits out front, and the Speed Art Museum, Kentucky's largest, is on campus. Newer construction is functional rather than beautiful, and the surrounding city presses in on the edges.

Safety
The UofL Police Department patrols Belknap, the Health Sciences Center and Shelby campuses 24 hours a day, backed by the SafeZone app and the Cardinal Shuttle. Vehicle theft is the most common reported offence by a wide margin, followed by burglary; the overall rate works out to roughly 4.7 criminal offences per 1,000 students.
Louisville's violent crime rate runs well above the national average, and the streets immediately around Belknap — Old Louisville to the north, industrial blocks to the south — need the same caution as any urban campus. A fatal shooting a few blocks off Belknap in August 2026 made the point. The campus itself is enclosed and patrolled; the walk to it after dark is where students take the shuttle.

Tour ResourcesLate September through mid-November, or late March into April. Louisville summers are hot and humid and campus empties. Derby week at the start of May takes over the entire city — memorable, but hotel prices triple and nothing about campus runs normally.
Visitor parking is in the Belknap garages and metered lots; the admissions confirmation gives the specific lot for your visit. The Cardinal Shuttle links Belknap with the Health Sciences campus. Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) is about 10 minutes from Belknap — one of the closest major airports to any campus in the country. I-65 runs along the eastern edge of campus.
