Campus Beauty
Beautiful

Colby abolished Greek life in 1984, but underground social organizations still linger as an open secret, creating quiet tensions around exclusivity on an otherwise egalitarian campus. The remote Waterville, Maine location means the social world is self-contained — house parties and the campus bar scene dominate weekends. The outdoorsy, preppy New England vibe is genuine, and the tight-knit community feel is amplified by everyone being stuck on the same hill together.

A hilltop campus in central Maine with Georgian brick buildings overlooking Runnals Pond and Johnson Pond, surrounded by forests and offering sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.

Based on Niche reviews, Princeton Review surveys, student forums, and institutional data.

Safety

Insider Tips
The Colby College Museum of Art is genuinely world-class -- the Alfond-Lunder Pavilion has 26,000 sq ft of gallery space and an entire wing devoted to American artist Alex Katz, who donated 400+ works. It's free and rivals museums in cities 100x Waterville's size.
Drive 10 minutes to the Two Cent Bridge (Ticonic Footbridge) -- a historic suspension bridge over the Kennebec River. Locals still call it that because it once cost two cents to cross.
Get an ice cream sandwich at North Street Dairy Cone: hand-churned ice cream between two warm, freshly baked cookies in the flavor of your choice. It's a Colby student obsession.
Explore the Special Collections in Miller Library -- it holds manuscripts and memorabilia of Maine poet Edwin Arlington Robinson, Thomas Hardy letters, and an extensive Irish Literary Revival collection.
Belgrade Lake is only 20 minutes from campus with swimming and hiking trails -- ask a student about their favorite lake spot for the authentic Colby-in-Maine experience.
Best Time to Visit

September through mid-October for spectacular Maine fall foliage and active campus life. Late April through May is also lovely. Avoid January-February when Waterville averages highs in the 20s and campus can feel isolated.
