Campus Beauty
Attractive

Bates has never had Greek life in its entire history — the college was founded on egalitarian principles and the inclusive social character is genuine, not a recent branding exercise. The social scene centers on house parties and the Outing Club is king. It's a creative, liberal, flannel-wearing campus where the lack of social hierarchies means you can float between groups, though some find the weekend options limited in a small Maine town.

A New England campus with attractive red-brick and granite buildings centered on a tree-lined quad, well-kept and charming but relatively compact and without a singular dramatic feature.

Safety

Campus SafetySafe

Campus Safety provides 24/7 coverage with a student safety shuttle, over 140 blue-light phones, and RAD self-defense training. Most incidents are alcohol-related.

Neighborhood SafetyModerate

Lewiston is a former mill city with crime rates somewhat above the Maine average. The area immediately around campus is generally safe, but some nearby neighborhoods warrant awareness.

Insider Tips
Eat at Forage Market in downtown Lewiston -- a cute cafe with the best bagel sandwiches in the area and a beloved Bates student hangout. Then walk to Simone's Hot Dog Stand, which has been serving for over 100 years.
Ask about the Puddle Jump -- during Winter Carnival (odd-to-even years, nearly a century-old tradition), the Outing Club chainsaws a hole in frozen Lake Andrews and students leap in. The four-day themed carnival includes performances, dances, and games.
Visit Stephens Observatory atop Carnegie Science Hall -- it houses the only Coronado Solarmax II 60 telescope in Maine, plus high-powered reflecting telescopes for night viewing. Ask about public viewing nights.
Drive 30 minutes to Packard Trail for a hike along South Pond's shores with two small waterfalls -- it's a 'super cute hike' according to students and rarely crowded.
Check out Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary (357 acres) just minutes from campus -- one of the largest bird sanctuaries in New England and a hidden gem that most visitors don't know about.
Best Time to Visit

September-October for peak Maine fall foliage and full campus life. January-February during Winter Carnival for the quintessential Bates experience. April for admitted student events. Avoid late December and March when campus is between terms.
