Cost to Qualify
A two-year science master's typically adds about $41,000 in borrowing on top of a bachelor's, but the spread by field is about two and a half to one: chemistry graduates borrow a median of $25,000, geosciences $31,000, general biology $35,500, genetics $41,000, bioinformatics $47,000, and ecology, evolution and marine biology $62,600 - the most expensive of the lot. Read that spread as indicative rather than measured: the figures come from the federal Scorecard and several rest on a handful of programmes, one for genetics and two for chemistry. Unlike a PhD, an assistantship that waives tuition is something you might win, not something to count on; plan to pay unless a specific programme puts funding in writing before you accept.
Sticker price, not what most people pay — scholarships, aid and in-state status all move it. Room and board is shown separately on each college's page. Where no body publishes a tuition average we show what graduates borrow instead, and say so — that figure leaves out anyone who did not borrow, so it is not the same measure as a tuition price.
AI Risk Assessment
Space food scientists develop and test food that can survive spaceflight and still keep astronauts healthy and eating. NASA's Space Food Systems Laboratory at Johnson Space Center in Houston, working with a research facility in College Station, Texas, produces the flight food, menus and packaging for NASA missions. It is also developing meals for future long missions that must stay safe, nutritious and appetizing for up to five years. Much of that is hands-on: cooking, freeze-drying, packaging and lab testing. AI cannot do it.
The desk side of the job is a different story. There is no government job category for space food science, so we look at food scientists in general. A 2025 Microsoft Research study of how much of each job's tasks AI chatbots can help with ranked food scientists and technologists 138th of 785 jobs, in the top fifth. BLS projects jobs for agricultural and food scientists to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, faster than the average for all jobs, with about 2,700 openings a year.
We are raising this from 1 to 2. The old 1 said AI cannot touch this work, but both of its sources turned out not to exist, and the evidence we did find shows AI can help with a real share of a food scientist's tasks. The hands-on lab work keeps the score low. Our read is that the bigger risk for a new graduate is not AI but how few of these jobs exist: NASA's own page names just two facilities that make its flight food.
What would change this score. If AI tools for recipe design and shelf-life testing let space food labs do the same development with noticeably fewer scientists, this goes to 3. This is a tiny field with no job data of its own, so every number here comes from the wider food science field.
