Social Worker

Social workers help people through the hardest stretches of life: children in unsafe homes, patients leaving the hospital, people living with mental illness or addiction. The heart of the job happens in person: home visits, crisis support, court, and building enough trust that someone will accept help. AI cannot do that part. The National Association of Social Workers put it plainly in 2025: "While AI can automate tasks, it cannot replicate the emotional and relational depth that defines our work." The same NASW piece expects AI to cut the time social workers spend on paperwork.

AI is already part of some of the job's decisions. Since 2016, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, has used a computer model that gives each report of suspected child abuse or neglect a risk score, to help call screeners decide which families to investigate. The county says the tool is designed "to support, not replace, professional judgment," and staff make the decision. Other places have built similar tools, and they are controversial: an AP investigation raised concerns about bias, and Oregon dropped its tool over racial equity concerns. Expect AI tools to be part of this job, and so will the argument about using them fairly.

One number points the other way, and you should see it. A 2025 Microsoft Research study measured how much of each job's tasks AI chatbots can help with, using 200,000 real conversations, and found AI helps most with information work: gathering, writing and explaining information. Child, family and school social workers ranked 39th of 785 jobs, in the top 5%. Healthcare social workers (269th) and mental health and substance abuse social workers (383rd) ranked much lower. We still rate this a 2 because demand is strong and the key decisions stay with people. BLS projects social work jobs to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, faster than the average for all jobs, with about 69,100 openings a year. Growth is fastest for mental health and substance abuse social workers (10%) and slowest for child, family and school social workers (4%), where BLS says state and local budgets may hold it back.

What would change this score. If agencies use AI note-taking and case-management tools to cut caseworker jobs instead of easing caseloads, this should go to 3, starting with child and family work. If the tools mostly take paperwork off social workers' desks, it stays at 2.
