Tuition and required fees. Living costs are not included

Four years of tuition and required fees runs about $56K at a typical public college in our list (in-state) and about $288K at a typical private one. Both are pricier than the US national averages (about $48K public in-state, $180K private nonprofit, College Board 2025-26) because our 161-college dataset only includes nationally-ranked schools, not every US college. This excludes room and board, which we show separately on each college's page.

Sticker price, not what most people pay — scholarships, aid and in-state status all move it. Room and board is shown separately on each college's page.

AI Risk Assessment

Moderate Risk (Level 3/5)How we score ›

Sales managers set targets, hire and coach salespeople, and keep the big customer relationships going. The managers themselves are in the middle for AI exposure: a 2025 Microsoft Research study of how much of each job's tasks AI chatbots can help with ranked sales managers 335th of 785 jobs. The people they manage are much more exposed. The same study ranked sales representatives for services 4th of 785, and wholesale and manufacturing reps 75th and 92nd. Gartner, a research firm that advises sales leaders, predicts that by 2028 AI agents will outnumber human sellers ten to one, and says most business buyers now prefer to buy without talking to a salesperson.

Gartner also warns that more AI is not the same as more output: it expects fewer than 40% of sellers to say AI agents made them more productive, and it tells companies to invest more in sales managers, as coaches who make their teams better. BLS projects sales manager jobs to grow 4% from 2025 to 2035, about as fast as the average for all jobs, with about 47,300 openings a year. BLS expects more sales to happen online without a salesperson, but says managers will still be needed to run the mix of online and in-person selling.

This stays at 3, and the reason is the path in. BLS says most sales managers first work as sales representatives, and that rep job is one of the most AI-exposed jobs there is. If companies need fewer reps, there are fewer people to manage and fewer ways to earn a promotion into management. The relationship and negotiation work at the top stays human.

What would change this score. If companies start cutting sales rep teams because AI agents handle prospecting and follow-up, this goes to 4. If AI tools mostly make existing reps better and hiring holds up, it could ease to 2.
