This is a projected career: a 'personal data steward' who helps people protect their personal data, control who gets it, and perhaps get paid for sharing it. The protecting part is real today; the getting-paid part barely exists yet. There is no government job code and no study of this role, so the score rests on what has happened to the tasks.

The clearest evidence is that a big piece of the protecting work has just been turned into a free, automatic public service. Until recently, getting your data removed from data brokers (companies that collect and sell information about people) meant filing requests with hundreds of companies one at a time, which the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) calls 'incredibly time-consuming and tedious'. Since January 2026, California's state-run DROP tool lets residents send one free request to over 600 registered data brokers, and from August 2026 the brokers must act on it. EFF says other states have introduced versions of the same law. DROP is plain software, not AI, but for this career the effect is the same: the routine part of the job is done by a machine, for free.

What is left is advice and judgment: explaining trade-offs, handling unusual cases and, if data marketplaces ever take off, negotiating terms. Privacy rules keep multiplying, which creates that kind of work. The main association for privacy professionals (IAPP) said in September 2026 that the push for new state privacy laws in the US is at an all-time high.

We move this from 2 to 3 (Moderate). Our old reasoning already said the day-to-day work of this job was highly automatable but scored it as if it were not. The DROP tool shows that happening. What would change the score: real markets where people are paid for their data, with demand for human advisers, would move this to 2. AI agents that manage people's privacy settings and data deals end to end would move it to 4.
