Cost to Qualify
You are paid rather than charged. Service academies take no tuition and cadets keep roughly $2,700 to $7,500 a year after mandatory deductions; ROTC covers tuition with a smaller stipend; OCS pays a full salary from day one. The real cost is a service commitment of four to eight years.

AI Risk Assessment
Military officers lead people and make decisions about the use of force, and that is the part of the job AI is least able to take over. US defense policy requires it: the Pentagon's directive on autonomous weapons says such systems must be designed so commanders and operators can exercise 'appropriate levels of human judgment over the use of force'.
AI is changing the tools officers work with, fast. In an April 2025 memo, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told the Army to put unmanned systems, such as drones, in every division by the end of 2026 and to enable AI-driven command and control at theater, corps and division headquarters by 2027. The Pentagon's 2026 budget request included a record $13.4 billion for AI and autonomy, most of it ($9.4 billion) for aerial drones. The Army also created a new AI and machine learning officer specialty (49B) in December 2025, with the first officers selected starting January 2026.
This stays at 1 (Minimal). AI is adding officer roles and changing what officers need to know, not replacing them. The same memo orders the Army to cut and merge headquarters, which could mean fewer staff jobs for officers, but that is a budget and structure decision, not AI doing the work. Expect to be trained to supervise AI and drone systems.
What would change the score: if AI-driven command and control leads the services to plan for fewer staff officers per headquarters, this would move to 2.
