Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical engineers design and test machines, from engines and heating systems to robots and factory equipment. Much of that work happens on a computer: 3D design (CAD), simulations of how a part handles stress or heat, calculations and reports. That is the part AI is reaching. A 2025 Microsoft Research study measured how much of each job's tasks AI chatbots can help with, using 200,000 real conversations. Mechanical engineers came out in the top fifth of 785 jobs, a little below software developers. Design software is adding AI too, such as "generative design" that proposes part shapes to meet goals like weight and strength. Routine design and analysis is also the work new engineers usually learn on, so if teams need fewer people for it, new graduates feel it first. That makes this a 3.

It is not higher because the job is tied to real, physical things. Parts have to be built, tested, broken and fixed, and someone has to answer for a design that fails. Demand is strong: BLS projects 11% growth from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all jobs, with about 17,800 openings a year. BLS expects part of that growth to come from automation itself, because factories adding complex automated machinery need mechanical engineers to design it and fit it in. In a 2025 article on how it handles AI in its projections, BLS said engineers will likely get productivity gains from AI similar to those from earlier software, and did not expect large AI-driven job losses in engineering. The Microsoft researchers also warn that a high score does not by itself mean job losses.

What would change this score. It goes to 2 if new mechanical engineering graduates keep finding jobs as easily as before while AI design tools spread. It goes to 4 if AI tools start producing finished, buildable designs that need only a quick check, and companies hire fewer junior engineers.
