Cost to Qualify
None of these has a required credential, licence, or accrediting body. People get in through portfolios and apprenticeship-style mentorship under a working pro: foley artists and mastering engineers typically learn by assisting in studios and building a demo reel; food stylists build a portfolio, often via prior kitchen or culinary experience; water sommeliers typically come out of wine-sommelier or hospitality backgrounds. Commercial courses exist - the Fine Water Academy sells a Certified Water Sommelier course for $2,200, and there are various private audio-mastering certificates - but none of them is an industry requirement. Treat them as optional credibility-builders a student could pay for, not something they must pay for to get hired.

AI Risk Assessment
Mastering engineers give recorded music its final polish before release. There is no government count of mastering engineers. The closest category, sound engineering technicians, had about 15,000 US jobs in 2025, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects it to shrink about 3% by 2035, while jobs overall grow about 3%. BLS names the reason in its outlook for audio and video technicians: advances in technology, including AI, "will allow fewer technicians to set up and operate broadcast, lighting, and sound systems."
For mastering the pressure is direct. AI mastering plugins and online services let artists with small budgets skip a human engineer. Quality still favours people at the top: in a 2024 blind test run by producer Benn Jordan, 472 listeners rated masters of one of his tracks, and two human engineers took first and second place, with automated and AI mastering tools filling third to seventh. LANDR, one of the most popular online services, did not even make the final. That was one song and an informal test, but it fits how the work is splitting: people pay for expert ears on records that matter, and cheap everyday masters go to software.
We keep this at 4 (High). In our view the budget work that used to train beginners is exactly where AI is good enough, so the path into the field narrows even if top engineers stay busy. We found no count of mastering jobs, so this rests on the nearest government category plus that reasoning. What would change the score: evidence that ordinary artists are going back to human mastering, or mastering jobs growing, would bring it to 3. AI masters beating professionals in careful blind tests would push it to 5.
