AI Risk Assessment
Playlist curators, called editors at Spotify, choose the songs for a streaming service's own playlists, such as Spotify's Today's Top Hits or RapCaviar, and decide which new releases get a push. It is a small field at a handful of companies, and software that picks music for each listener already does much of what they do.
The cuts so far came in 2023. Radio Ink reported that Spotify's 2023 layoffs included playlist curation jobs; that December alone, Spotify cut 17% of its staff. The same week, about 40 people lost their jobs at Tidal, most of them from its playlist team, as its parent company Block cut costs. Meanwhile the AI features keep coming. Spotify launched an AI tool that builds playlists from a typed request in 2024, and in January 2026 it rolled out 'Prompted Playlist' in the US and Canada, which builds a custom mix from a listener's own description and can refresh it daily or weekly (CNBC). That is the 'what to play, and for whom' part of the job, done by software for each listener.
There is a counter-signal. In an April 2025 Billboard interview, Spotify's global head of editorial said she had realized listeners value human input more than ever, and had rebalanced toward human editors after years of AI features. The team now works under its own names and makes video and written content. Spotify's editors even wrote the sample prompts for Prompted Playlist. These are the company's own statements, but we found no reports of new editorial cuts since 2023.
We lower this from 5 to 4 (High). AI does most of the matching of music to listeners, the field is tiny, and cuts have already happened. But our 5 means a career that is actively shrinking, and the latest evidence shows Spotify keeping and promoting its editors, not cutting them. Our earlier text said Prompted Playlist cuts out human curators entirely and that most curation jobs no longer exist; we could not find support for either. What would change the score: a new round of editorial cuts at a major service would move this back to 5. Streaming services hiring more editors would move it to 3.
