Autonomous Vehicle Fleet Coordinator

An autonomous vehicle fleet coordinator would run the day-to-day operation of a fleet of self-driving vehicles: keeping them charged, cleaned and repaired, handling incidents, and working with remote support staff and regulators. Robotaxi fleets now run in a few US cities, but there is no government count of this job, so much of this score is projection.

The best look at the human side of these fleets comes from a March 2026 investigation by Senator Ed Markey's office, based on answers from seven self-driving companies including Waymo, Tesla and Zoox. Every company relies on remote human workers who step in when a car is stuck or unsure what to do; they give the car guidance rather than drive it. No company would say how often that happens. Half of Waymo's remote assistance workers are based overseas, including in the Philippines. That points to two pressures on these jobs besides AI: the software is built to need people less over time, and some of the remote work can be done from abroad.

The closest government category, transportation, storage and distribution managers, is projected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to grow about 6% from 2025 to 2035, faster than the 3.5% average. Two AI-company studies of chatbot use at work put that job near the middle: Microsoft ranks it 234th of 785 jobs and Anthropic 190th of 756. Both companies sell AI.

We keep this at 3 (Moderate). Fleets will need people for repairs, emergencies, police and regulators, and growing fleets may add jobs. But this job manages systems designed to run themselves, and in our view routine routing and scheduling is work the fleet software is built to do. What would change the score: companies disclosing that the number of staff per vehicle is falling fast would push it to 4. Robotaxi fleets spreading to many more cities, with operations hiring growing alongside, would bring it to 2.
