Across ~321,700 pro athletes and coaches/scouts (BLS Employment Projections, SOC 27-2021 + 27-2022, 2025), roughly the top 0.5% (~1,600) are established pros on solid multi-million contracts or major-program head coaches earning ~$3.5M. The very top — a Kirby Smart (~$13M) or a superstar athlete ($40M+) — is only a handful of people.

Cost to Qualify
No credential gates any of these nine careers — the real barrier is an audience, an audition, a portfolio, or luck, and BLS confirms no formal education is required to enter acting or music performance. These are also nine of the lowest entry-level salaries in our whole dataset ($20K-$40K), so 'free to start' does not mean 'easy to make a living' — the missing cost shows up later, as unpaid years spent building a body of work instead of a tuition bill up front.

AI Risk Assessment
No AI can compete for you. Professional athletes win on physical skill, training and nerve, and coaches win by teaching, motivating and reading people in real time. AI is a tool on the edges. A 2025 Microsoft Research study of how much of each job's tasks AI chatbots can help with ranked athletes 206th and coaches 318th of 785 jobs, because most jobs include some information work that AI can help with. The authors themselves warn that a high score does not mean a job will be automated, and a chatbot cannot play the game. That is the rubric's "1 Minimal".
The hard part of this career is the numbers, not AI. BLS counts only about 22,900 professional athletes and sports competitors in the US, with about 2,200 openings a year, and projects 6% growth from 2025 to 2035, partly because college athletes can now earn money from endorsements under name, image and likeness (NIL) rules. Coaching is far bigger: about 298,800 jobs, 6% projected growth and about 36,400 openings a year, driven by college, professional and youth sports.
What would change this score. If teams start letting AI make coaching and scouting decisions and cut analyst and assistant coaching staff, the coaching side could move to 2. The athlete side stays at 1.
