Cost to Qualify
You are paid from the first day and finish without student debt. First-year pay starts around $28,400 and steps up to roughly $46,000, reaching full journeyman scale by the end. Most programmes include classroom instruction; the Department of Labor says most let you avoid student debt, though it does not spell out who covers the tuition.
Sticker price, not what most people pay — scholarships, aid and in-state status all move it. Room and board is shown separately on each college's page.
AI Risk Assessment
HVAC technicians install, repair and replace heating, cooling and refrigeration systems on site. Finding why a system is failing, working in attics and on rooftops, and handling refrigerants safely are physical jobs. Smarter thermostats and diagnostic software help, but they don't do the repair. On the rubric's main factor, how much of the daily work AI can do, this job scores very low.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects HVAC jobs to grow 11% from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average, with about 40,600 openings a year on a base of 440,900 jobs. That is up from the 8% BLS projected a year earlier. BLS names data centers among the construction driving that growth, and says more sophisticated climate-control systems will add demand, not reduce it. A September 2025 study by CSIS, a Washington think tank, explains why AI data centers matter here: AI server racks draw 40 to 50 kilowatts each, far more than ordinary servers, and need liquid cooling that ordinary air conditioning can't handle.
In this trade AI is mostly a source of new work. What would change the score: diagnostic tools good enough to cut the number of site visits per repair by a lot, or BLS projections turning flat.
