AI Risk Assessment
Graphic design is one of the clearest cases of AI shrinking a career, and the evidence now comes from several directions at once. AI image generators turn a written description into a finished image, and anyone can use them. A study published in Management Science in 2025 looked at a large global freelancing platform and found that after AI image generators arrived, job posts for image-creation work fell 17%. BLS now projects graphic designer jobs to shrink 2% from 2025 to 2035, and it says why: automated design tools such as AI are expected to make designers more productive and reduce the need for them. In a 2024 survey of employers for the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, graphic designers ranked 11th among the fastest-declining jobs to 2030. The report notes this was new: in its 2023 edition, employers expected graphic designer jobs to grow moderately. A government projection of decline that names AI as the cause, plus falling demand for freelance image work, is the rubric's "5 Critical": a career that is actively contracting.
A 5 does not mean the job disappears. BLS still expects about 16,000 openings a year, all of them to replace designers who retire or leave, and it says companies building their online presence will keep needing designers for layouts and branding. But in a shrinking field each opening draws more competition, and simple image-making, the kind of work beginners often start with, is exactly what the freelance data shows AI replacing.
What would change this score. If BLS's next projections show graphic designer employment holding steady, or demand for freelance design work recovers, this comes down to 4, as translation did when BLS stopped projecting a decline for it. Design work that depends on judgment about a brand, a product or a space is on safer ground than one-off images.
