Color Forecaster

Color forecasters predict which colors will sell a year or two ahead, for fashion, home goods and cars. It is a very small field with no government job count.

Much of the job is spotting signals in huge amounts of data, from runway shows to social media to sales, and AI is now good at that. NPR reported in October 2025 that forecasting firms such as Heuritech use AI to track runways and social media and flag trends months early; one of its picks for the coming year was the color yellow. But everyone NPR spoke to agreed that AI cannot do fashion prediction on its own. WGSN's chief forecasting officer said AI is excellent at jobs like predicting how much stock to order, but human experts have to check that a trend going viral online will actually turn into sales.

The closest data-heavy desk job, market research analyst, is among the most exposed jobs in two studies of how people use AI chatbots at work: 5th of 756 jobs in Anthropic's data and 26th of 785 in Microsoft's. Both companies sell AI, and neither studied color forecasters directly.

We lower this from 4 to 3 (Moderate). AI now does a meaningful part of the research, which squeezes the junior "collect and sort the data" work in a field that was tiny to begin with. But the evidence we found shows firms keeping human forecasters and using AI alongside them, not replacing them. What would change the score: forecasting firms or brands cutting forecasting staff because AI now produces the trend reports would push it back to 4.
